Bishop McDevitt High School's new president, Dr. Matthew Powell, is committed to service learning. He started the new academic year by sending the sophomores, juniors and seniors off for a morning of service while the faculty did freshmen orientation at the school. Glenside Rotary President Norma was privileged to be able to chaperone six hard-working, enthusiastic students. The group walked to the Glenside Library, and then spend two and a half hours reorganizing the non-fiction section of the library to move all the books off the top and bottom shelves. They were able to complete this whole section, which Head Librarian Mary Kay Moran told the students she had been trying to get done for the past year. While not a difficult project, students worked well together and learned how they needed to anticipate and plan before they started moving - or they would have to re-arrange the books multiple times in order to get them all to fit. We were proud to have been able to get the entire section completed in such a short period of time thanks to great teamwork.
